3 Excuses That Keep You From Clicking “Publish” in Business
Is anyone else just blown away by how quickly this year is passing us by? I mean, we are already halfway through quarter 2 and, I don’t know about you, but there’s so much to do and just never enough time to get it all done in.
…and often that’s the truth, but I bet if you think about it, you waste a lot of time just “spinning”. No – I’m not talking about spinning around the way you did on the tire swing on your elementary school playground, until someone threw up or started to cry.
I’m talking about the inactive, “just thinking” phase before implementing the next big plan or clicking publish on the blog post or offering a new service. Sounds familiar?
No matter where you are in your small business journey, it can be incredibly intimidating to think about putting yourself out there the first time (or 10th).
It’s the place where we feel stuck. Or unmotivated. Or concerned. Or…you get the idea.
This is the time when all of the excuses surface:
- Is this REALLY the right course of action?
- Do I have the right tools in place?
- Maybe I should do a little more research?
…and on and on and on.
Sure, there’s a time period of research and planning involved in any project or new venture – but in most cases, we wait way too long to “click publish” or “go live” with our best ideas. And, by putting it off, we are selfishly keeping our much-needed solutions to ourselves (and losing revenue in the process).
There are three excuses I hear ALL of the time from would-be business owners – so I just want to take a few moments to bring those to light so that we can address them and move past them.
Why? Because someone needs what you have to offer – that’s why!
Excuse 1: It’s Not Perfect
“But, I don’t want to put my stuff out into the world until it’s perfect.”
I hear this all of the time and, honestly, I struggle not to roll my eyes. I want to respond with, “Are you perfect?” Because the answer would, inevitably, be, “No.”
Here’s the deal: if you aren’t perfect – nothing you put out there will be perfect. So, you can spin and spin and spin – going nowhere – only to find that it’s still not perfect.
There will always be something you can do to make your blog post, course, offering, or new service better.
In fact, six months or a year from now, you’ll know a lot more than you do at this moment and maybe even want to go back and make changes. But, if you wait until it’s perfect before you click publish, you’ll waste tons of time (and money) doing so.
AND, in the meantime, your potential client will likely have moved on to your competition.
The worst of all worlds, right?
Reason 2: Afraid of Other’s Opinions
Chances are there is something you do in business that differs from someone else’s viewpoint of what you should do. And that something might be keeping you stuck.
In my case, paid ads. I don’t believe they are a successful route for entrepreneurs or small businesses to take until they have the foundation of content marketing in place.
You can imagine that my viewpoint varies widely from a great majority of online marketers. Why? Because paid ads create more revenue for marketers. I know that. Other marketers know that. But unsuspecting mompreneurs who are aspiring business owners do not. So, when I step in there and shake up the status quo – it makes people uncomfortable.
You know what? That’s okay. Why? Because I’m not looking for clients who want to use paid ads as their primary strategy to get new clients. I’m in the business of building long-lasting business-client relationships through content marketing. I know it works and I’m not afraid to say so.
But…there was a time when I wasn’t as upfront about this topic. I was worried that others would speak poorly about me. Or that, I’d lose business.
And yet, quite the opposite happened. Instead, those that choose to work with me know that I’m not going to offer a sub-par or quick-fix option. I’m here to get them clients that will stick around. To ensure they have recurring revenue.
Think about the blog post, course, or service offering you are getting ready to launch. Are you holding off because someone might not like what you have to say? If so, stuff it in a drawer and decide you aren’t going to pursue it at all because there will ALWAYS be at least one person who doesn’t agree.
The flip side of that coin is that there will be plenty that need to hear what you have to say and do want the results that you can provide them.
So…will you give in to the opposition or get ready to make big, profitable waves? The choice is yours.
Reason 3: You’ll Be Committed
Many times, the reason we don’t click publish is because we are scared of commitment. Much like a relationship where one party gets cold feet right before the big day, the idea of clicking publish might have you running for the hills (or at least ready to dump your entire manuscript in the fireplace so that no one ever gets the chance to read it.)
Whether it’s a blog that you’ve decided to write weekly or a course that you’ll teach live for 12 weeks, once you click that publish button, you know you’re committed. You show up for your clients, your readers, or your subscribers once, and they’ll be looking for you to follow through – to continue to show up.
Rather than make that commitment, the temptation is to spin. Like the tire swing, we go ‘round and ‘round, and end up right where we started. Our clients miss out on what we have to offer, and we leave revenue in the dust.
But – there’s a better way. You can click publish, show up for your subscribers and clients, and find huge business growth. Because that’s what happens when you show up. They find what you have to say useful in solving their problem. You keep showing up to do so. And they buy from you.
It’s the best of all worlds, but it takes you making the commitment AND THEN consistently showing up.
But…it takes commitment. Commitment to them and commitment to yourself. That starts by clicking publish.
Take Action: Just Click Publish
Alrighty, you know me! I’m a huge proponent of taking action, because action is where the dreams turn into the reality. And that’s why every Mama Business episode comes with action steps you can take immediately to up level your mama life and business. Ideally you’ll take action on all of the things we’ve discussed today, but if you only have time for one, it’s this:
Seems like it should be easy, but I know that’s not always the case.
The need for perfection, fear of what others might think, and uncertainty around commitment, selfishly keeps the solution you have to offer from those who need it most. It’s the difference between having a successful online business and one that flounders and, eventually, fades away to nothing.
If you want to be a successful small business owner in the long-term, clicking publish is key. Your client NEEDS and WANTS you to solve their problem.
But, if they can’t find what you offer, your business runs the risk of staying unnoticed, unengaged, and, ultimately, making no money.
When you do click publish, you give the opportunity for others to see how you solve their problem, to recognize you as an authority in your industry, and for your business to grow as you accumulate new (grateful) clients and customers.
